“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

Albert Einstein

Forest School, for both pupil and teacher, is an opportunity to move away from the monotony of classroom learning and instead to engage in hands-on, self-directed learning.

During Forest School, children are provided with opportunities to explore the natural environment; experiencing appropriate risk and challenge while directing their own learning. Research has shown that Forest School stimulates imaginative play through hands-on engagement with the surroundings.

Our research included more than 30 interviews with children aged between four and nine –  – They felt able to apply skills they had learned in school in more meaningful ways and they also developed a range of non-academic skills. Forest School encouraged them to think creatively – to step out of their comfort zone – take risks and to work more closely with their peers. They also reported being more physically active learning how to move safely in the unpredictable and challenging space of a woodland.
